Our New Little Reader and New Little Walker
I've been feeling a bit nostalgic today, and I'm also in the movie-making mood after posting the Valentine video earlier today, so I a wanted to share clips of the new skills being learned around here lately along with some distant memories while looking back through my picture archives.
Eli has shown an interest in learning how to read, so I found some free online printable phonics books (themeasuredmom.com) for him to try. In an attempt to keep him motivated to keep reading the little booklets, practice sight words, and complete correlating phonics worksheets along with workbook pages to keep up the momentum, I let him fill in a sticker chart with 1 sticker for each activity completed. A row of 10 stickers earns a treat from the prize box and a completed chart of 100 stickers earns a special trip somewhere. The first night I introduced this to him, he was an eager little beaver and filled up 3 rows. Since then, he has almost completed 2 full pages of 100 stickers each so far earning himself a trip to Applebee's and the Family Museum in Bettendorf. I love his enthusiasm for learning and hope it continues to grow as he gets older.

Aliyah has just recently traded in her crawling mode of transportation by taking her first steps.

Mini Valentine's Party
We celebrated the upcoming Valentine holiday this week by hosting our own mini Valentine's party. After completing a couple related worksheets while practicing addition and beginning sounds of words, we began by baking some strawberry muffins. Next, Eli most enjoyed using the stapler while creating the heart wreath. The family mail station was a big hit and kept us busy for quite a while sending/receiving little love letters. The "heart" walk, similar to the concept of a cake walk of walking in a circle to music until the music stops led to a few prizes if the numbered heart landed on matched the number called. Lastly, we wrapped up our festivities with some tasty treats including the muffins we baked earlier, strawberry pudding cups, red velvet flavored marshmallows, and s'mores.
